I had the honor of covering the grand opening celebration of the newest and quite possibly the nicest library in Oakland on 81st Avenue a few weeks ago for the Oakland Public Library and the State of California. It was especially fun to have an editorial assignment — it brought me back to my photojournalist days at the newspaper! Several dignitaries such as Mayor Jean Quan and Chief of Police Anthony Batts spoke during the ceremony. This neighborhood really needed a library where people, young to old, could come and learn in a wonderful and positive environment. In was heartwarming and impressive to see such a large crowd who showed up in full spirit.
The 81st Avenue Library opened on January 29th 2011, after years of collaboration with the City of Oakland, the State of California, and Oakland Unified School District.
